Meet River: The Husky Who Runs a Tight Ship

Aug 8, 2026

River, a husky mix dog, lying down next to a small black and white tuxedo kitten resting against her side.

We call River our honorary 21st cat, but her actual bio makes a stronger case than the joke does: she's been part of this household since before most of the actual cats were born. River — Munchie, to us — came in as a puppy, back when it was still just Bubba, Pinky, Sweat Pea, and Skitty Pearl. Sparky joined a couple of years later, and the two of them have been best friends and sleeping buddies ever since. So while the "cheating a bit with #21" bit is fun, the truth is she's more OG than most of the cats she supposedly just tags along with. And she's not just along for the ride, either — by her own bio's account, River runs a tight ship. She's "the queen of the cats," and excessive fighting simply isn't allowed when she's around. Combine that with the rest of what we already knew — she doesn't bark, she's out cold on the couch something like 16 hours a day, and she's a notoriously picky eater — and you get a dog who's spent so long surrounded by cats that she's basically become the senior one. So yes, technically: 20 cats and one dog. Functionally: 21 cats, and the oldest, most senior one happens to occasionally howl instead of meow.
