The Realities of a 21-Cat Household Nobody Warns You About

Everyone asks about the cute stuff first — the group photos, the chaos, the "how do you even remember all their names." Fewer people ask about the parts that are actually hard, so here's some of that. Sootsoot has been spayed since she was a kitten, right on the same timeline as the rest of her litter. Somehow, it clearly didn't take the way it's supposed to — three months later, she went into heat anyway, and now she cycles regularly, as if the surgery never happened. We don't have a diagnosis for it, just a real, ongoing issue we manage as best we can. It's disruptive for the whole house, not just her, because we've also got neutered males whose instincts don't know the difference between "spayed" and "should be responding to this." Then there's a quieter kind of hard: three of our cats — including Teanie, the runt of the third litter — came out of a feral, outdoor kittenhood with what we've been calling an aggressive eating habit. It's almost certainly a holdover from not getting enough milk as newborns in the woods behind the house. It's not something you fix by just feeding more; we're actually working on getting Teanie some exercise with a wheel to help manage her weight the right way. It's an ongoing thing, not a solved one. And there's Sparky — the youngest of our four original cats, and, maybe not coincidentally, the one who's had the hardest time adjusting to the hoard. Being the newest and most spoiled before everything expanded meant she had the most to lose when the house went from four cats to twenty-one. Her adjustment isn't a solved problem either; it's ongoing, same as Sootsoot's and Teanie's. We're not experts, and we're not claiming to have any of this fully figured out. What we do have is a lot of real, lived experience with the unglamorous logistics of scale — the litter box math, the medical oddities, the feeding realities, the personality clashes that don't resolve just because everyone's fed and healthy.
